The global aquarium trade (2018)
Commissioned by Swiss NGO Fondation Franz Weber (FFW) in response to the proposed construction of an aquarium in the city of Basel, Switzerland, the investigation delved into the commercial trade of live wild-caught fish for aquariums. Issues surrounded the welfare and sustainability of such a trade. The investigation took place in Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa and Europe.
Investigation conclusion: It was found that more than two thirds of fish for the global aquaria perish at capture and during transportation. Those that survive have shortened lifespans in aquaria. It was also discovered that species populations are threatened by the aquarium trade. Partly as a result of this investigation, the aquarium in Basel was never constructed. A referendum in the city rejected the proposal to build it.
