The Risks of Trophy Hunting (June 2023)

This is a response to a document circulated by Brian Child et al entitled Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill: The Risks to Conservation, Rights and Livelihoods. Broadly, the document claims that the Bill will undermine conservation efforts and negatively affect the rights and livelihoods of local and indigenous communities.

Investigation conclusion: The claims in this document are being made in support of a trophy hunting industry that is, in our view, unethical, unsustainable, and wracked by poor government, vested interests and corruption. Ultimately, any financial contribution that trophy hunting might provide for wildlife conservation or local community development is far outweighed by the harms it causes to wild animal populations, and local people.
